Shield Competition Finals

Presidents Handicap Shield Final
Winners Trinity B
Runners Up Trinity E

Chairmans / Joyce Loader Handicap Shield Final
Winners Cop/Maid B
Runners Up Foresters D

The two Handicap Shield Competitions concluded with both finals played on the same evening at the Holbrook Club.

In the Presidents event, Jack Marston, Tim Hayden and John Major from second division Trinity E, took on the first division title winners Trinity B. A great start from Sam Egan third game on, swung this tie, Sam producing a fine controlled loop and hit display against the experienced John Major, winning 21-9, 21-3. The tone of the match was set, but Jack, Tim and John did not give up, Jack especially impressing with his forehand hits.

Joe Comper has been “mean” through out the competition and again had only 38 points recorded against him. He has been backed up superbly all season by Ben Dewsberry, but on this night it was Sam who caught the eye, conceding only 50 to help over haul the 178 points start given to the E’s. Another great night for Trinity in only their second league season.

The Chairmans Shield was always going to be a close match, featuring two classy 1st division teams Stuart Brooks, Gary Bristowe and Derek Flanagan
of Cop/Maidenbower B against the Foresters D line up, Alan Terry, Alison East and Nina Williams.

A dogged display by league chairman Derek swung this tie, his defiant display notched him 101 points against the on paper higher average Foresters squad. Starting with a small 14 point “blind” advantage, Foresters D despite playing well could not find the one low total end needed, so the finely balanced tie went the Coppers way by a slim 15 point margin.

In the outstanding shield quarter final, a strong Horsham G side of Mark Weston, Matt Van Yperen and Graham Beaney just failed to overhaul a 198 point handicap, by the narrowest of margins. Up against the ever improving Trinity D trio of Carys Dunn, Jacob and Connor White the G’s fell one point short, sending Trinity D into the semi final against Cop/Maid B

In this quarter final round both Crawley Sports A and Foresters F experienced heavy defeats to lower division opponents.. The Sports lost out to Trinity E, Rohan Venner and Geoff Brown both had good wins over John Calcutt who was playing in his left handed mode but the tie was swung Trinity’s way when John Major took an end from Rohan and beat Phil Tash 21- 5, 21-13.
Fielding a reserve, Foresters F crashed out of the competition, they found Brian Stevens, Andy Veitch and Ian Campbell in top form, and the Holbrook handicap proved to be on the generous side.
Gary Bristowe showed his former Premier experience, in the Cop/Maid B win over Horsham E. By sharing ends with Mark Collins and Eric Van Mol and notching a 17 against Rory Scott, he took the B’s to a win, to the relief of his teammates Stuart Brooks and Derek Flanagan who had found the going tougher.
Joe Comper, Ben Dewsberry and Sam Egan all notched up huge differentials against Holbrook C. In the match Brian Chinnery was the only Holbrook player to get to double figures with a 12 against Ben.
Making a second visit to Foresters in a week, this time to play the F team, Horsham J were well acquainted with the various paths and hazards that lead to the now mythical Foresters hut in the forest. But on arrival they found two more in the shape of Fred Batten and Dolly Gilbert. On the night Fred rolled back the years beating Nick Caunter 21-18, 21-17, and sharing his ends with Piers Van Mol 21-12, 18-21 and Liam Cuffe 21-19, 15-21. 12 year old Laura Szczegoski put in a solid performance with a pair of 12’s over Piers, but with Dolly notching a 21-17 over Piers and a 21-15 against Liam it was enough to give the hut men and women an 18 point win.

With Five of the 10 shield matches in this round decided by 6 points and under, it highlights once again that every point is important using the “ Blind Handicap System”.

The only real exception this round was in the Trinity B v Crawley Sports E game. The Trinity “Mean Machine” of Ben Dewsberry & Joe Comper conceded only 53 points between them, gaining their team a comfortable victory, no heroics this time for the Sports Norman Mully.

In one of the tightest matches, Mark Collins & Eric Van Mol scored well, but it was a 21-2, 21-0 win by Premier star Rory Scott that sealed a 4 point win over Crawley Sports C, Julia Cornish putting up some resistance taking a 12 and 14 from Mark. Horsham proved you can overhaul a huge deficit, starting 254 points behind the fifth placed Division 2 team.

The Horsham I team of Freddy Goodall, Brian Betts & James Arnold gave Foresters D a good test, the 166 start received, not quiet enough, as they lost by 2. David East, Nina Williams and Alan Terry showed their experience, but Freddy did notch a pair of 18,s against David, Alan Terry too strong on the night.

Top of Division 2, Crawley Sports D, took on one of the struggler’s from the First Division, Holbrook A. Despite a Dave Webb 21-18, 21-20 victory over Marie Campbell and strong performances from both Mark Jones and Oleh Buga, the 60 point start left them short by 2.

Playing for Foresters H in the match with Trinity C, Jane Blackburn showed her Olympic spirit taking an end from Ashley Comper 21-20, just enough for another close 6 point win to Foresters, leaving the Comper clan with only one member in the quarter finals.

David Thompson had a great night for Holbrook C, taking the second end 21-17 over Howard Bostock, having notched up 14 in the first, it ensured C,s 35 point win over Crawley Sports B.

Another Holbrook team through, are the B,s made up of Ray Sutton, Andy Veitch & Ian Campbell, who were receiving a 170 start against Copthorne Maidenbower A. They just held on, winning by 3 over the strong trio of Colin Hodges, Maggie Smith & Bob Sumpter.

Reports

With all bar one of the preliminary results now in, it looks as if most games have followed on from last years experience, providing close results. The one real exception was Trinity B versus Crawley Sports C. With the C’s unable to field their best player, it left Trinity led by Joe “The Merciless” Comper to romp to an easy victory by 91 points which included a 21-0 score on the card by Joe.

In a repeat of last years final the holders Trinity D played Cop/Maid A and this time “The Coppers” reversed the result, winning by a slim 8 point margin.

A player who always rise’s to the occasion in the shield is Norman Mulley from Crawley E, his 21- 18 win in the first, against Derek Flanagan edged his team to a 11 point win over Cop/Maid C.

Playing for Foresters H, Paul Cullen had a very close game with Nick Caunter just losing 21-20, 21-18, to help his team defeat Horsham J by 30 points.

Two Premier teams from Horsham entered the competion this year, with the current table topping Horsham E side losing out to Crawley Sports D. A good performance from Oleh Buga, who took an end off Eric Van Mol, enabled the Sports backed up by Dave Foster and Mark Jones to win by 43. In this match Rory Scott showed his class, conceding only 23 points.

Other notable feats came from Matt Craig Foresters F, conceding 29, and the previously mentioned Joe Comper only 25.

The match between Cop/Maid D and Foresters E finished early due to a leg injury to Paul Szczegloski, leaving him unfortunately unable to play on.
