Singles Table Tennis rules

The Table Tennis competition will consist of two events: men’s teams and women’s teams.

Team Events

  • If a player is not able to play a match due to injury he or she will forfeit the match but he or she can participate in his subsequent matches of the team match. If a player is not able to play, the team may continue the competition with two players.
  • For the men’s team event, each team match consists of five individual matches and shall end when one team has won a majority of the possible individual matches. Each individual match shall be the best of five games.
  • Before the start of the match, the team that won the toss shall choose to be either the ABC team or the XYZ team. The captain shall nominate the players who will play the singles matches. The remaining matches (if necessary) will be set in a way to ensure that each player plays a maximum of two matches according to the following system:
    Order Type ABC team XYZ team
  • After choosing ABC or XYZ team, the captain shall nominate players in position A, B, C or X, Y, Z.
  • For the women’s team events, each team match will consist of three matches, the second match being a doubles match. Each match will be best of three games
    Doubles Any two players
  • The team competition will follow a Group and Knockout (single elimination) format. The teams will be divided into four groups. In each group, every team will play against each of their opponents (in the same group) once. The top two teams will qualify for the knockout phase. In the knockout phase, the winners of the group will play with one of the runners-up from other groups.
  • Prizes and medals will be awarded to only the top two teams.
  • Disqualification: General principles

  • The referee shall have power to disqualify a player from a match, a team match, an event or a competition for seriously unfair or offensive behavior.
  • If a player is disqualified from 2 matches of the team event, he or she shall automatically be disqualified from that team event.
  • Specific rules for team events: Withdrawal of a team

  • The team will be considered as withdrawn from the team match, if it does not start the first match of a team match (walkover) or decides not to finish the team match. If a team withdraws from a team match, the team match will be won 3-0 by the opponent.
  • If a team is disqualified or withdraws after the draw but before the start of the competition: the team will not be replaced.
  • If a team is disqualified or withdraws during or after the competition:
  • During a scheduled team match. The team will lose that match by forfeit (the team match by 3-0, each match by 3-0 and each game by 11-0). The opposing team will advance to the next round.
  • After the results of a team match have been approved. The team will lose the last team match by forfeit (the team match by 3-0, each match by 3-0 and each game by 11-0). The team disqualified will not be ranked, the ranks of the remaining teams will be adjusted accordingly, and the ranks of the teams that have already finished the competition will be shifted up.
  • Clothing and equipment

  • Playing clothing shall normally consist of a short-sleeved shirt and shorts or skirt, socks, and playing shoes; other garments, such as part or all of a track suit, shall not be worn during play except with the permission of the referee.
  • Clothing may be of any color or colors except that the main color of a shirt, skirts, or shorts, other than sleeves or collar of a shirt and trimming along side seams or near the edges, shall be clearly different from that of the ball in use.
  • Any markings or trimming on the front or side of a playing garment and any objects such as jewelry worn by a player shall not be so conspicuous or brightly reflecting as to unsight an opponent.
  • nly non-marking shoes will be allowed in the playing court.
  • 2 Boys team of IIT Kanpur will be participating in the event.
    These rules of the ITTF Handbook 2013-2014 as adopted from time to time by the Table Tennis Federation of India shall apply unless otherwise modified.
