Sunshine Table Tennis

Florida’s Sunshine State Games presents the Polk County Festival will host approximately 1, 500 amateur athletes from throughout Florida competing in eight sports (Canoe/Kayak, Judo, Karate, Racquetball, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Weightlifting and Wrestling). Five of the sports (Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Weightlifting and Wrestling) will take place at The Lakeland Center.

This is seventh consecutive year Polk County has hosted a Sunshine State Games Festival. Since 2007, more than 21, 000 amateur athletes have been in competition in Sunshine State Games events in Polk County.

Saturday, June 22

  • Canoe/Kayak (Sprints) – W.G. Roe Park, Winter Haven, 7:30 a.m.
  • Judo – The Lakeland Center, Sikes Hall, 8:00 a.m.
  • Karate – The Lakeland Center, Jenkins Arena, 9:00 a.m.
  • Racquetball – Lakeland Family YMCA, Check for daily start times and schedule
  • Table Tennis – Simpson Park Community Center, 8:00 a.m.
  • Taekwondo – Lakeland Center, Jenkins Arena, 8:00 a.m.
  • Weightlifting – The Lakeland Center, Jenkins Arena, 8:00 a.m.
  • Wrestling – The Lakeland Center, Exhibit Hall, 8:00 a.m.

Sunday, June 23

  • Canoe/Kayak (Marathon) – W.G. Roe Park, Winter Haven, 8:30 a.m.
  • Wrestling – The Lakeland Center, Exhibit Hall, 8:30 a.m.

Among the athletes competing are 64 individual athletes from the Lakeland/Polk County area. Amongst the notable Polk County residents that are set to compete this weekend include Rachel Kane of Winter Haven, who trains at Old School Martial Arts, will compete in the Judo competition after winning a gold and silver medal in the 2012 Games. Competing in his eighth consecutive Sunshine State Games Taekwondo event is Lakeland’s Molden Dozier, a black belt competitor from the Turning Point Academy.

Registered to compete in the Table Tennis competition at the Simpson Park Community Center is 16-year old Jay Khatri, of Lakeland, who won two gold medals and a bronze at the 2012 Games. His father, Arun Khatri, who won a silver medal in the 2011 Games, will also compete.

Winter Haven’s Ken Drew will play Racquetball for the first time in the Sunshine State Games at the Lakeland Family YMCA. He has been a Florida Senior Games racquetball player gold medal winner dating back to 2002. He won gold medals in 50-54 age group in 2002 and 2003 and 55-59 age group gold medals in 2006 and 2007.
